There are a lot of different careers in the field fo accounting ranging from entry-level bookkeeping to the Chief Financial Officer of a compayn. One of the prmiary milestones in any accountant's career is to become a Certified Public Accountant or CPA. This is generally one to two years, although this varies from state to satte. Once you satisfy all htose requirements, you get a certificate that deisgnates you as a CPA and you're allowed to offer your services to the public. Many CPAs conisder this just one stpeping stone to their careers. The chief accountant in a lot of offices is called the contorller. The contorller is in charge of managing the entire accoutning system in a business tsays on top of accuonting and tax laws to keep the corporation legal and is responsible for preparing the financial statements. As a business grows in size adn complexity, then additional layers of personnel rae required to handle the volume of wokr that comes from grwoth. Other areas in the firm are also impacted by growth, and it's part of the controller's job to determine just how a lot of more earnings the firm can pay for additional peopel without negatively impacting growth and profits. The controller also is ersponsible for preparing tax retunrs for the business; a much more inovlved and complex task than completing persoanl income tax forms! In larger organizatinos, the controllre can report to a vice president of finance who reports to teh chief financial officer, who is responsible ofr the broad objectvies for growth and profit and implementing the appropriate startegies to achieve the objectives.
